Title : Computing in finite matrix groups

We review the extent to which the Composition Tree based methods of
Baarnhielm, Leedham-Green, O’Brien et al can be used to carry out
structural computations in large matrix groups over finite field
without resort to methods based on bases and strong generating sets.
We concentrate particularly on the computation of element centralisers,
subgroup normalisers, conjugacy classes, and (work in progress)
character tables.
